Bureau Veritas classes first newbuilding LNG-fuel oil/chemical tanker built by Avic for Terntank Rederi AS
Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, August 30, 2016 - Leading
international classification society Bureau Veritas has classed the first LNG-fuelled
newbuilding oil/chemical tanker, the 15,000 dwt Ternsund, built under BV class
at Avic Dingheng, China and delivered to
Denmark’s Terntank Rederi at the end of June 2016. The new vessel is the result
of close co-operation between Terntank, Avic and Bureau Veritas.
The Ternsund is the
first of a series of four ships all equipped with the Wärtsilä RT-flex50-D
dual-fuel low-speed engine. This is the first installation of such engine
and it was done under BV class. In early August the vessel became the first
ever ship to take on LNG as bunker fuel in the port of Rotterdam, qualifying
for an LNG bunkering premium equal to a ten per cent reduction in port dues.

Ternsund is an IMO Type 2
oil/chemical tanker able to carry 9 grades of cargo in 16 different tanks. It
will operate in North European waters under charter to a Finnish company. The Wärtsilä RT-flex50-D
dual-fuel low-speed engine will deliver 5,850 kW propelling the 147 m LOA
vessel via a CPP propeller delivering a service speed of 14.5 knots. LNG as
fuel is stored on board in 2 Type C tanks on deck containing 315 cu m of LNG
each.

Bureau Veritas approves FPSO composite repair system
Leading international
classification society Bureau Veritas has approved in principle the repair of offshore structures using
the bonded composite product Coldshield, developed by Paris-based start-up Cold
Pad. Coldshield is a composite structural reinforcement specifically developed
for the harsh environments of offshore units.
Matthieu de Tugny, Senior Vice-President and Head of Offshore,
Bureau Veritas, says, "Coldshield offers
a long awaited solution for the repair of corroded offshore structure without
the need for welding or downtime. We have combined our expertise in marine composites and bonding with our experience of the
hydrodynamic loadings and constraints of offshore units to assess Coldshield.
We believe that Coldshield is the first non-welded structural repair method available
for an FPSO hull.”
Marine
offshore structures such as FPSOs are subject to a harsh environment combining
high loads, fatigue and potential heavy corrosion. The classical method of
repair by welding is not always possible, or needs long downtime. The idea of
bonded structural composite repair has been under development for many years
but bonding and composite repairs usually require a controlled environment,
making them unsuitable for offshore structures.
Coldshield
is a patented solution to make reliable structural bonded repairs. It is a
complex product made of high standard composites, specifically chosen polymers,
alloyed in a shield of Superduplex steel and fluorosilicon joints. Specific
production techniques such as vacuum resin injection and structural bonding
were optimised to reach the robustness necessary for onboard bonding in an
offshore environment. The product was developed in partnership with Total and
IFPeN.
Approval in Principle by Bureau Veritas confirms that the design is
feasible, achievable, and that the research and development campaign is
relevant to demonstrate the ability of the product to behave in accordance with
its specifications. Bureau Veritas'
engineers verified the suitability to the environment for installation and
product life, composite and polymer design, characteristics and ageing, test
adequacy with the on-board loads and environment severity, structural
efficiency and strength of the whole product.

Bureau Veritas slashes design review times with digital 3D model
Leading
international classification society Bureau Veritas has dramatically slashed
structural computational and verification times.
The dramatic reduction in the time
needed to check the structure, seakeeping and stability of new vessels and
floating offshore units is being delivered through the use of a powerful 3D
model which links directly to BV’s entire VeriSTAR suite of calculation tools.
Philippe Donche-Gay, Executive
Vice-President, Marine & Offshore Division, says, “The power and ease of
use of our new modelling software enables us to build a detailed 3D model of
the proposed vessel very quickly, much more quickly than has ever been achieved
before. That model interfaces directly with all our tools, meaning no data has
to be entered twice, saving time and improving accuracy. Ship designers,
shipyards, ship owners and offshore operators are going to benefit from major
time and cost savings as we move our entire design and plan approval onto this
new digital platform.”
Bureau Veritas’ new system is
based on a strategic partnership with France’s Dassault Systèmes under which
Bureau Veritas will use Dassault’s 3DEXPERIENCE platform to dramatically speed
the creation of detailed 3D models of ships and floating offshore units.
The model allows end-to-end
calculation without data re-entry through all the analysis and design phases,
then will facilitate construction by simplifying the order of steel cutting. It
will then go on to form a digital twin of the vessel or unit and be maintained
in an as-is state for the life of the unit. This will facilitate maintenance
and repair or conversion decisions.
A pilot project with the
well-known Chinese design institute SDARI has been completed. Two new aframax
and suezmax tanker projects from this designer were modelled by using the new
3D platform. The models were then automatically transferred into BV’s
structural calculation software VeriSTAR Hull, in which the latest CSR Rules
for oil tankers are fully integrated.
The process enabled the designer to check compliance with the CSR Rules
in a very quick, powerful and easy way.
Says Donche-Gay, “What’s
different about this new platform, and what creates the time and cost saving,
is the power of the modelling software. We now only have to build one model and
we do not have to create multiple data sets to use different tools for hull
strength, stability and other vital calculations. We also improve traceability
in-house as there is only one data entry.”

Bureau Veritas classes world’s largest specially-built asphalt carrier
Leading
classification society Bureau Veritas is classing the 37,000 dwt asphalt
carrier Asphalt Splendor, recently
delivered to US-based Sargeant Marine. The vessel was built at Avic Dingheng,
China and is one of a series of two designed by Chinese design institute SDARI
in co-operation with Sargeant.
The
hot asphalt can be carried liquid at temperatures up to 170 deg C in sixteen
independent tanks with a total capacity of 35,666 cu m.

RINA Group delivers Ballast Water Management guidance
International
classification society RINA has completely revised and updated its guidance on
the Ballast Water
Convention and the procurement, installation, operation and certification of
Ballast Water Treatment Systems. The guidance is now available to shipowners,
shipyards and equipment manufacturers as a Technical Bulletin.
Dino Cervetto, Director of Technical Services, RINA Services, says,
“The IMO Ballast Water Convention is almost certainly going to come into force
in 2016. Following the recent ratifications if the IMO confirms that the
trigger point has been reached, the BWM Convention will enter into force on 24
November 2016. Owners need to make themselves aware of major impending changes
to ballast water regulation and RINA’s guidance will help them with that.”
The BWM Convention imposes a challenging ballast water discharge
standard. In response to this, a number of technologies have been developed and
commercialized by different manufacturers. These systems have to be tested and
approved in accordance with the relevant IMO Guidelines.
In addition to the IMO, other national bodies have introduced
regulations in response to national concerns. The most influential of these is
the United States Coast Guard (USCG), which has established both regulations
and guidelines to prevent the introduction and spread of aquatic nuisance
species into US waters.
The US and IMO BWM Convention requirements impose technical and
operational challenges on shipowners, shipyards and equipment manufacturers.
RINA’s Technical Bulletin “Ballast Water Convention and Ballast Water
Treatment Systems Guidance on procurement, installation, operation and
certification” gives an overview of the BWM Convention and US requirements and
provides detailed information on the implementation dates for both of them,

installing a ballast water treatment system in order to ensure compliance with

Bureau Veritas issues international pilotage certification to Port of Cork
Leading
classification society Bureau Veritas has issued its first certificate under
the ISPO (International Standard for Maritime Pilot
Organizations) standard of best practice for pilots and pilot organizations to
the Pilotage Authority, Port of Cork, Ireland. The ISPO certification covers
the Pilotage services and Vessel Traffic Management System.
The ISPO is an accessible
industry specific standard, managed by a group of users, that improves safety
and quality and provides transparency to shipowners and stakeholders on
pilotage standards.

RINA launches Competence Management System certification
International
classification society RINA Services has launched a new Competence Management
System certification which helps ship owners and managers to raise the skill
levels of their crews and shore staff above the basic statutory requirements.
Italy-based PB Tankers is the first company to benefit from the new voluntary
certification.
RINA’s Competence Management System guides shipowners
and managers to develop and maintain high level targeted skills in their ships’
crews and operational shore staff. Its certification benefits them by proving
to charterers, authorities, financiers and insurers that the company has a
system for ensuring that its crews have the skills and competence required to
operate safely and efficiently in today’s complex marine environment.

RINA’s Competence Management System is set out in RINA
NCC89E Rules for the Certification of Competence Management Systems. It requires
companies to establish,
document, implement and maintain a competence management system and continually
improve its effectiveness in accordance with the requirements of the rules. The
company must determine the criteria and methods needed to ensure that both the
operation and control of the competence management system are effective and
ensure the availability of resources and information necessary to support the
operation and monitoring of the competence management system.
The CMS has to include a competence management policy, a plan for the
implementation of the competence management system on board and ashore, defined
company objectives and indicators relevant to the competence management system,
procedures for competence assessment and gap analysis and a plan of competence
acquisition. A monitoring and evaluation process must be built in.
The CMS is certified for three years following a
process of initial audit, then maintained with annual audits. It can be
integrated into an existing business management system and is complimentary to
and works with and alongside industry systems such as the TMSA.

has safely completed its Marine Warranty Services for Anadarko on the
installation of the Heidelberg spar in the Gulf of Mexico. The installation was
done utilizing the semi-submersible crane vessel Thialf. MatthewsDaniel
provided project engineering review and attendance monitoring for all critical
operations including the lift and set of the spar production topside, living
quarters module, stair towers, platform crane, flare boom, and cellar deck
extension.

by nine combination chain/polyester mooring legs in 1,600 m water depth.
Installation of the
topsides involved transportation to its location 390 miles offshore from Corpus
Christi, Texas and a lift of 9,255 tonnes to set the main topside in
place.

Bureau Veritas approves GTT pressure tank Bunkering Ship concept
Leading classification society Bureau Veritas has granted Approval in
Principle to a 4,000 cu m Bunkering Ship concept developed by France’s world-leading
LNG containment manufacturer, GTT. The concept is for a bunker tanker which
could deliver LNG as ship’s fuel using tanks with a GTT Mark III Flex Cargo
Containment system operating up to a pressure of 2 barg. Combining the membrane
containment system with the ability to store LNG at pressure’s up to 2 barg
allow the bunker vessel to have a higher capacity and increased operational
flexibility.
Philippe Donche-Gay, Executive Vice President and head of BV’s Marine and
Offshore Division says, “Practical LNG bunker tankers are the
key to building a viable LNG supply chain on which to develop LNG as a ship’s
fuel. This pressurised membrane tank concept from GTT means LNG bunker tankers
can manage Boil Off Gas (BOG) better and increase loading and delivery flow
rates. Our studies show it is both safe and practical. We look forward to
seeing the concept taken forward to a new construction.”
Under GTT’s system the BOG management during loading
and bunkering operations is made more flexible because of the wide vapour
pressure operating range. Vapour can be buffered and condensed in the tanks to
help the fuelled ship or feeding facility handle the vapour. Condensation may
be performed by spraying LNG into the vapour phase. The higher pressure also
means that during voyage and stand-by mode, the duration before gas pressure in
the bunker tanker’s tanks reaches the upper limit is longer. This improves the

RINA Group widens gas sector services
International classification, certification and
engineering group RINA has widened its services to the global gas industry.
While its traditional classification society arm RINA Services has recently
approved a new Compressed Natural Gas carrier to aid the exploitation of
marginal fields, the groups’ engineering arm, D’Appolonia, is delivering
geotechnical, social and environmental services to the Mozambique LNG
development.
The gas market and technology are constantly changing,
and RINA Services and D’Appolonia lead those changes. The first offshore FSRU,
the first FLNG project, the first marine CNG ship and the longest offshore
pipeline were all delivered with RINA expertise and assistance.
Mozambique LNG
project
D’Appolonia has completed a major near shore site
investigation for ENI’s Mozambique LNG project. The survey included
environmental, geophysical and geotechnical teams, utilizing two jack up
platforms, three survey spreads, a mobile field laboratory and over fifty site
personnel. Data will be used for design of the marine facilities of the
terminal and the landfall for the gas pipeline arriving from the offshore
wells. The terminal will consist of gas receiving and processing, liquefaction
facilities, cryogenic storage tanks and loadout facilities to export the
liquefied gas via tankers.
D’Appolonia is also acting as the Independent
Environmental and Social Consultant foreseeing the development of offshore
production facilities, subsea gas pipelines, and onshore LNG processing
facilities. D’Appolonia’s Lenders Engineering division is currently undertaking
the Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) for the Mozambique LNG
Project, which is a first of its kind LNG facility on the east coast of Africa.
Approval in Principle for CNG Carrier
RINA Services has approved in principle the Fincantieri Offshore CNG32000 ship design
which is aimed at delivering a cost-effective solution for monetizing marginal
gas fields using Compressed Natural Gas technology. The vessel has a
double-hull and a cutting-edge system of racks that are separately demountable
for in-depth and safer maintenance.
RINA Services has developed rules to cover the safety
issues related to CNG transportation, with the aid of Approval in Principle and
Technology Qualification certifications to cover the most important aspects
relevant to the fitness for service.
Transporting natural gas under pressure as CNG instead
of liquefying it offers advantages of simplicity and much lower cost and so
makes viable alternative means of exploiting isolated or marginal gas fields
which will not support a full infrastructure.
The CNG32000 design features a CNG cargo handling
system and a CNG storage system. This entails 500 racks of metallic vessels at
166 bar and 25°C, each rack accommodating twelve pressure vessels of about 5.35
cu m arranged in ten cargo holds giving an overall transport volume
of 32,000 cu m (1.13 MMscf).
The design follows the recently issued RINA Rules for
the Classification of CNG Carriers and IGF Code, and is supported by extensive
risk assessment studies on the ship safety, safe operations and environmental
protection, including collision studies, which are being carried out in the
expected areas where the CNG32000 will trade.

Bureau Veritas to class unique Arctic ice-breaking LNG carriers
Leading international classification society Bureau Veritas is to class the
series of innovative Arctic-capable LNG carriers which will be built in Korea’s
DSME yard to service the Yamal LNG project in Russia’s high Arctic.
Exporting LNG from Yamal calls for a type of LNG carrier never built
before. A series of fifteen vessels will be built, each capable of transporting
172,000 cu m of LNG and operating in second year ice up to 2.5 m thick. YAMAL LNG has awarded Sovcomflot, MOL, Teekay and
Dynagas one, three, six and five vessels respectively.
They will be built to dual Bureau
Veritas/Russian Register class.
Philippe Donche-Gay, Executive Vice President and head of BV’s Marine and
Offshore Division says, “We have made extensive investments in research into
ice loads and navigation in ice, working with major Russian institutions and
Asian shipyards. This effort, coupled with our world-leading expertise in large
LNG carriers gives us a strong technical base to class these highly
sophisticated vessels.”
The 300 m loa vessels will
carry 172,000 cu m LNG in four membrane tanks. The tank membranes will be of
the GTT NO 96 type. The hull form is designed with a moderate ice bow forward
and a heavy ice-breaking profile aft. The ship is dual-acting, navigating in
light ice or open sea bow first, then navigating astern to break heavy ice. The
astern ice breaking mode is assisted by the unique podded propulsion system
which consists of three pods delivering around 45MW of power. Separate engine rooms
housing the diesel generator power plants will be encased in a double hull to
give protection from the ice and a high level of redundancy.
The ships will be built
to Russian Register Arc7 standard,
equivalent to an intermediate level
between Polar Class 3 and Polar Class 4 of Bureau Veritas rules, for year-round
operation in second-year ice with old ice inclusions with ice thickness of 2.5
m. The vessels will be highly winterised with Bureau Veritas winterization
notation COLD (-45,-52) which
means that the hull is prepared for operation in -45 Celsius ambient
temperature and the equipment should be able to work at -52 Celsius.
Safety of the vessels and care for the environment will be enhanced by a
forward and aft ice belt to add strength to the hull in key areas and a very
detailed fatigue life analysis to ensure the structure can with withstand the
expected extreme stresses for the life of the vessel. Bureau Veritas’ IceSTAR
tool is being used to assess the hull ice loads.
