MatthewsDaniel completes Heidelberg Marine Warranty
Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, November 3, 2015 – MatthewsDaniel
has safely completed its Marine Warranty Services for Anadarko on the
installation of the Heidelberg spar in the Gulf of Mexico. The installation was
done utilizing the semi-submersible crane vessel Thialf. MatthewsDaniel
provided project engineering review and attendance monitoring for all critical
operations including the lift and set of the spar production topside, living
quarters module, stair towers, platform crane, flare boom, and cellar deck
extension.

Located in the Green Canyon Area of the Gulf of
Mexico, the Heidelberg joint-venture is led by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation
and features a truss-spar design. The spar dimensions are
33.5 m diameter, 184 m length and gross weight of nearly 20,000 tonnes, moored
by nine combination chain/polyester mooring legs in 1,600 m water depth.
Installation of the
topsides involved transportation to its location 390 miles offshore from Corpus
Christi, Texas and a lift of 9,255 tonnes to set the main topside in
place.

RINA Group widens gas sector services
International classification, certification and
engineering group RINA has widened its services to the global gas industry.
While its traditional classification society arm RINA Services has recently
approved a new Compressed Natural Gas carrier to aid the exploitation of
marginal fields, the groups’ engineering arm, D’Appolonia, is delivering
geotechnical, social and environmental services to the Mozambique LNG
development.
The gas market and technology are constantly changing,
and RINA Services and D’Appolonia lead those changes. The first offshore FSRU,
the first FLNG project, the first marine CNG ship and the longest offshore
pipeline were all delivered with RINA expertise and assistance.
Mozambique LNG
project
D’Appolonia has completed a major near shore site
investigation for ENI’s Mozambique LNG project. The survey included
environmental, geophysical and geotechnical teams, utilizing two jack up
platforms, three survey spreads, a mobile field laboratory and over fifty site
personnel. Data will be used for design of the marine facilities of the
terminal and the landfall for the gas pipeline arriving from the offshore
wells. The terminal will consist of gas receiving and processing, liquefaction
facilities, cryogenic storage tanks and loadout facilities to export the
liquefied gas via tankers.
D’Appolonia is also acting as the Independent
Environmental and Social Consultant foreseeing the development of offshore
production facilities, subsea gas pipelines, and onshore LNG processing
facilities. D’Appolonia’s Lenders Engineering division is currently undertaking
the Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) for the Mozambique LNG
Project, which is a first of its kind LNG facility on the east coast of Africa.
Approval in Principle for CNG Carrier
RINA Services has approved in principle the Fincantieri Offshore CNG32000 ship design
which is aimed at delivering a cost-effective solution for monetizing marginal
gas fields using Compressed Natural Gas technology. The vessel has a
double-hull and a cutting-edge system of racks that are separately demountable
for in-depth and safer maintenance.
RINA Services has developed rules to cover the safety
issues related to CNG transportation, with the aid of Approval in Principle and
Technology Qualification certifications to cover the most important aspects
relevant to the fitness for service.
Transporting natural gas under pressure as CNG instead
of liquefying it offers advantages of simplicity and much lower cost and so
makes viable alternative means of exploiting isolated or marginal gas fields
which will not support a full infrastructure.
The CNG32000 design features a CNG cargo handling
system and a CNG storage system. This entails 500 racks of metallic vessels at
166 bar and 25°C, each rack accommodating twelve pressure vessels of about 5.35
cu m arranged in ten cargo holds giving an overall transport volume
of 32,000 cu m (1.13 MMscf).
The design follows the recently issued RINA Rules for
the Classification of CNG Carriers and IGF Code, and is supported by extensive
risk assessment studies on the ship safety, safe operations and environmental
protection, including collision studies, which are being carried out in the
expected areas where the CNG32000 will trade.

RINA develops new rules for offshore platforms
Italy’s
RINA Services has responded to the challenges of life extension and new
regulatory regimes by completely updating its Rules for the Classification of
Fixed Offshore Platforms. The new rules and guidelines will be published in May
2015 and will cover classification, certification and verification of fixed
offshore oil and gas platforms.
Andrea
Bombardi, Head of the Energy Department, RINA Services, says, “The rules and
guidance provide a comprehensive guide to classification, certification and
verification. They are a cradle-to-grave framework for the structural and
process safety of the entire platform. They build on RINA’s experience with
offshore platforms in the Mediterranean, Red Sea, Indian and Atlantic oceans
and the Caspian Sea. The new rules facilitate life extension, reduce downtime
caused by inspection and maintenance and give owners more choices and control
over their design, operation and maintenance strategies.”
Original
design, fabrication, installation, structural assessment, topside process
certification, life extension assessment and de-commissioning are all covered.
Environmental protection is central
to the new rules which have been developed with the aim of significantly
reducing the risk of accidents and environmental damage.
Platform
designers and operators can choose from and mix three approaches:
classification, certification and verification.
Under each of the
approaches RINA’s rules now allow for Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD),
a probabilistic approach to structural assessment. International standards
incorporated include API RP 2A and the ISO 19900 series.
The rules set out
clear guidelines and requirements for assessing fatigue and corrosion issues to
determine what must be done to allow platforms to continue to operate beyond
their design life. The life extension approach incorporates Risk-Based Inspection
(RBI) and risk-based maintenance planning. RBI can provide significant economic
benefits for operators by better targeting of inspection and maintenance
resources and reduced downtime.
RBI and monitoring
and measurement in service are included in the requirements and guidance for
topside process certification or verification.
Says Bombardi, “The
new rules provide all parties with clear pathways and choices between all the
most modern techniques and technology for the design, fabrication, installation,
operation, life extension and de-commissioning of offshore fixed platforms.”

Bureau Veritas classes Brazil's largest FPU
Petrobras’ P-55 Floating Production Unit (FPU), the largest and the first of this kind entirely built in Brazil, is on its way to the Roncador Field, Campos Basin, where it will be installed in a water depth of 1,790 metres. The column stabilized semi-submersible has a capacity of 180,000 bopd and 6,000,000 cu m of gas. The unit is classed by Bureau Veritas. BV group companies also provided a wide range of verification and support services which made the major project possible.

The P-55 was designed by Petrobras R&D Department (CENPES) and GUSTO (deck box and topsides). It was built over several sites simultaneously. The main ones were the lower hull fabrication and assembly at Estaleiro Atlantico Sul (EAS) in Suape, Pernambuco state and main production modules fabrication, integration and commissioning by QUIP at Estaleiro Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul state.

Bureau Veritas launches pipeline damage assessment tool
Tecnitas, the marine advisory arm of leading
international classification and verification group Bureau Veritas, has
launched a major new technology simulation system for pipeline damage
assessment, in collaboration with Total. This new technology system, called
EMPREINTE, allows pipeline operators to quickly determine safe operating
pressures after a pipeline is damaged. It is a software suite which provides a
vital decision making tool which will save operators money and cut downtime for
pipeline repairs.
Offshore energy pipelines can sustain all sorts of
damage like
dents and gouges due to external injuries, internal or external corrosion due
to a corrosive effluent and failure of coating or cathodic protection, weld
defects and straining due to ground movements. Operators need to know if the
pipeline is safe to continue operating or if some pressure reduction or
shutdown is required. EMPREINTE does that very quickly.
Level 3
assessments of pipeline damage are based on advanced calculations such as
finite elements. The advantage of finite element calculations is that they give
a more accurate assessment of the state of the pipe and the safe operating
pressure but they need usually detailed material data and are very time
consuming. EMPREINTE is a pre and post processor to Abaqus finite element
calculations which will perform reasonably conservative level 3 assessments in
a very short time period, typically within 48 hours from defect discovery to
assessment. That will typically permit pipeline use to continue when it might
otherwise have needed to be shut for repairs. EMPREINTE can also be used in the
design phase of the pipeline.
The principle of EMPREINTE,
based on finite element calculations, is to use the defect pipe profile to
design back a virtual tool from which the damaging process is modelled. The
burst strength of the damaged pipe is determined after an iterative process to
match the measured and calculated profiles. This actual burst strength is used
to derive a safe operating pressure.
The
tool has been validated with full scale tests in various conditions. It
includes criteria to capture failure by plastic collapse and by ductile
fracture after significant damage development. It has been recently extended to
the assessment of dents submitted to cyclic loading conditions using the Dang
Van criterion.

Bureau Veritas sharpens ice tools
Leading international classification
society Bureau Veritas has responded to demand for safe LNG transportation in
the Arctic regions by developing new high-level tools to assess cargo sloshing
in ice conditions. It has also developed a cutting-edge probabilistic method
for assessing ice loads on structure which will reduce the time and data needed
to assess the structure of vessels and units designed for heavy ice operation.
Pierre Besse, Director of Innovation,
Bureau Veritas, says, “All eyes are on the Arctic sea routes and on the opening
up of the Arctic mineral and energy resources. We have to ensure the vessels
and offshore units that operate in those extreme conditions are safe. That is
why we have invested heavily in research into ice loads on structure and the
effects of cargo sloshing caused by collisions with ice for LNG carriers and
oil tankers. That investment gives us powerful tools which we are using to
shorten the time needed to assess designs for key Arctic projects and routes.”
A new module for Bureau Veritas’ IceSTAR
ice load calculation tool will calculate the kinetic energy imparted to the
cargo by a collision with ice. The kinematics derived from IceSTAR can then be
used together with CFD analysis to determine how the cargo will slosh and the
extra loads this will impose on the ship’s structure and the LNG containment
system.
Says Besse, “When gas and oil cargoes
begin moving regularly through the Arctic it is certain that ships and ice will
interact. The energy from those collisions will cause the cargo to move violently,
and we have to make sure the ships and especially LNG containment systems are
built to withstand that. It is a complex calculation requiring high level
modelling but we can do that, and do it in a commercially acceptable time
frame. BV is working on a number of high Arctic projects such as Shtokman and
Yamal and these tools will make them safe and ready more quickly.”
A research collaboration with the State
Maritime Technical University of St Petersburg has led to BV upgrading IceSTAR
to include the use of probabilistic methods to calculate ice loads. “Ice
properties vary widely,” explains Besse. “There are always issues with input
data. This research has proven that using stochastic methods we can overcome
limitations in the input data to produce safe and robust outputs for the loads
which ships and offshore structures may expect from Arctic ice.”

OSD to design Boskalis-SMIT cable laying vessel
OSD-IMT, the UK arm of IJmuiden-based Offshore Ship Designers, has been chosen by Samsung and Boskalis-SMIT Engineering to develop the basic design, detailed design and production drawings for a 99 m cable laying vessel. Neil Patterson, managing director of OSD-IMT, says, “This project illustrates perfectly the strengths of the OSD group. We can bring strong offshore engineering experience in the UK to bear on the basic design, and work with our Shanghai office to develop the yard drawings. It is a unique new vessel and we will carry out the model testing programme, noise and vibration analysis and impact and damaged stability analysis in addition to developing the design.” The vessel combines a large, obstruction free main deck with ample accommodation facilities, allowing for multiple future configuration possibilities. In the current cable laying configuration, the deck has a cable loading capacity of 5,000 tonnes. Under a separate contract OSD-IMT has been tasked by Dales Engineering Ltd, Aberdeen to design and develop the upgrade conversion production drawings for the Farstad-owned UT 755 multi-role 67 m PSV FAR SCOTIA. The new design will provide upgraded existing and new additional accommodation, ROV equipment and associated seating, new A-frame and associated winches/seating, new deck cranes and associated column/stiffening, new workboat and associated davit and seating.
